North Goa
After Eight
This European restaurant may be difficult to find, but is definitely worth the visit! It is located between Calangute and Candolim and is near the Sarkar ice factory. This exquisite restaurant is set outdoors, and you can watch your meal being cooked in the glass-fronted kitchen. Service is outstanding and reservations are essential.
Banyan Tree
Each year since 1988, a different Thai chef is imported from Thailand to spruce up the menu and add a personal touch. It is located at the Taj Holiday Village in the Bardez district. This classy Asian eatery is proud of its herb garden, where essential Thai ingredients like lemongrass, ginger and bird chilies are grown. The seafood creations are a must; try the tasty curry-infused crabmeat and spicy lobster! Reservations are required.
A Ferradura
This small beach is located 15 km northwest of Panjim and is in the Bardez district; a lively place known for its hopping “shack life”. The beach is named for the mouth of the Baga River (at its northern end).
Britto’s
This Goan beach shack is located on Calangute Beach. At this terrific eatery, one can sit in the beach shack or in the restaurant section. The talented chef, Cajie Britto, serves up an amazing pork vindaloo and an excellent prawn curry. To quench your thirst, there are always bottles of chilled Kingfisher beers available. A live one-man band plays on Monday nights, karaoke is offered on Thursdays, and a barbeque is held on both nights. Reservations are essential during peak season.
Bean Me Up
In 2005, Lisa Camps decided to open this wholesome, clean, organic-food restaurant at Vagator Beach. Tofu lasagna, huge scrumptious salads, tofu ice cream and tofu cheesecakes are just a few of the items that are offered on the menu. You can also watch movies here on Thursdays or catch a live dance performance or live Spanish band on Sundays. Kids are well taken care of in the kids’ corner, with its comfy floor mattresses and cushions, reading and colouring books.
Copper Bowl
The eclectic Goan food at this restaurant is sensational! It is located in the Calangute area. The typically Goan dishes are served from quaint copper pots and are absolutely mouthwatering. The coconut-based chicken or fragrant prawns are some of the popular items on the menu. Reservations are essential.
Le Restaurant Francais
This elegant French-fusion restaurant is located in the Calangute district. Lit by the moon, the stars and a number of old chandeliers dangling from the branches of surrounding trees, this is truly a magical restaurant. At one time, Janis Joplin and The Beatles used to frequent this eatery. Must-tries include: the baby calamari and the filet of sardines on phyllo pastry. Be sure to leave space for the delectable desserts! Reservations are essential.
Morisco
Expect Goan specialties here at this seafood barbeque restaurant at the Fort Aguada Beach Resort. There is also a marvelous view of the sea. The catch of the day is marinated in traditional Goan spices and served along with local music and the waves. Reservations are required.
Panjim & Central Goa
Viva Panjim
The charming owner of this small, family-run restaurant on a quiet lane in Panjim is likely to fill you in on her life story as you dine on scrumptiously prepared Goan, Tandoori and Continental dishes. There are a couple of outdoor tables and the chicken xacutti is delicious
Riorico
This restaurant is known as one of the best places in Panjim for Goan food. The dining-hall like venue serves very tasty dishes from the local fried fish and prawns to the Portuguese-influenced seafood. It is located in the Hotel Mandovi.
Hotel Venite
This restaurant has a lot of character and traditional Goan food. With four tiny balconies hanging over the street and rustic, colourful décor, it’s a lovely place to enjoy a meal or a drink. The specialties here are: Goan sausages and tiger prawns.
New Café Hema
This is a cheap, clean place near the municipal market, which serves very good fish curry and rice (Rs. 20) and affordable vegetarian snacks for under Rs. 10. Entrance is at the rear and up some stairs.
Sher-E-Punjab
This restaurant serves the best tandoori in town and a lot of variety as well. The casual atmosphere and simple décor creates a relaxing and fun environment. It is located in the Hotel Aroma.
Mum’s Kitchen
Located in the Martin’s Building is this laidback Mediterranean restaurant. The owner, Rony Martins, not only invites you to examine his kitchen for standards of hygiene and his fish for freshness, but he is also on a mission to revive authentic Goan cuisine. Tasty items such as: crab cooked in thick, spicy coconut gravy and fish stuffed with hot spices are offered on the menu. Reservations are required during the peak season.
South Goa
The Village Plaza
This food area is located in the Park Hyatt Goa Resort and Spa. It is designed along the lines of a medium-sized village square and offers a number of interconnected restaurants. “Da Luigi” serves wood-oven pizzas and pasta, “The Market Grill” offers charcoal-grilled prime cuts and seafood, “The Juice Bar” has wonderful, light healthy beverages, and “Sambar” offers pure vegetarian South Indian food.
Martin’s Corner
This famous, family-run eatery is located in the village of Betalbatim near Majorda. It definitely preserves the feeling of a shack with its cane lamps and cane bar. Pleasant retro music and the aromas of Goan cooking fill the air at lunch and dinnertime. Reservations are recommended.
Fernando’s Nostalgia
It is known as one of the best restaurants in the entire state, and it is located in the tranquil village of Raia. The restaurant is unpretentious, inexpensive and serves great Goan food! Fernando’s serves dishes such as salted ox tongue, spinach soup and prawn meat-cakes, which are rarely found in restaurants elsewhere in the state. There is also a lively band that plays during the evenings!
Alegria
This Goan restaurant, located at the Taj Exotica, is reminiscent of an old-fashioned drawing room, with sepia photographs on the walls and exquisite wooden furniture. There are a variety of scrumptious items on the menu such as an assortment of curries, classic pork and seafood. Live singing adds to the elegant scene. Reservations are essential
Carnaval
It is located in the Ramada Caravela hotel and offers great fusion cuisine. The interior includes low-hung lamps, a bamboo ceiling and walls decorated with Mario Miranda cartoons. This cheerful restaurant is only open for dinner.
Flavors
If you’re in the mood for something other than Goan cuisine, this restaurant offers tasty Pakistani and Afghani food. You can dine indoors or on a terrace overlooking the Radisson’s lovely pool. The kebabs and tandoori breads are wonderful. Service is also impeccable at this restaurant. Reservations are required.
Jamavar
This formal and stylish Indian restaurant is located at the upscale Leela Beach hotel. The restaurant overlooks the pool and has dishes you’re unlikely to encounter elsewhere in Goa such as: marinated chicken with wild fig yogurt dressing and lobster tikka with cherry tomato chutney.
Sea Pearl Hotel
This restaurant is located in Colva and is highly recommended for affordable seafood and Western dishes. The kitchen is spotlessly clean, and the menu is quite impressive with lots of daily specials.
