Bogmalo Beach
This pretty and pristine beach is seldom overcrowded and is perfect for swimming and sunning. It is located 24 km north of Madgaon. It’s near a low hill topped by a few modern buildings on one side and the Bogmalo Beach Resort on the other. Bogmalo Beach also has great boating and water-sports facilities (diving, jet-skiing). A great place to eat lunch is a simple, thatched-roof shack right on the beach called “Seagull”, which serves some of the best prawn-curry rice in Goa.
Cansaulim Beach
This secluded, quiet and clean stretch of beach is located between Bogmalo and Colva. It is also very close to the Dabolim airport and Madgaon town, yet far away from the crowded north and the congested beaches of Colva. This beach is located 10 km northwest of Madgaon.
Majorda & Utorda
Just north of Colva beach, Majorda, and nearby Utorda, which have a number of resorts, are rapidly sacrificing peace and quiet to larger volumes of tourists. These beaches are cycling distance from Colva and Betalbatim, both known for their restaurants and shack life. If you stay here you’ll have yourself a great base from which to explore the sights and sounds around Madgaon.
Colva
It is located about 7 km west of Madgaon, in the Salcete district. Colva Beach is known as one of the most congested beaches of south Goa. Its large parking and entrance areas are crowded with shacks selling snacks and souvenirs. The water is good for swimming. The restaurants and bars shacks are the hub of nightlife for the entire region.
Madgaon (Margao)
This town is located 33 km south of Panjim and 7 km east of Colva beach. It is an ideal place to do your money changing, travel arrangements, shopping and book-buying. There are also some historic houses, churches and a lively seafood market, where you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables, to explore.
Loutolim
Loutolim village is where the Big Foot Museum, also known as the Ancestral Goa Museum, is located. The village is 10 km northeast of Madgaon. The Museum re-creates a 19th Century Goan village in miniature form. There are many guides on-hand to explain the significance of every object and article on display; highlights are the fishermen’s shack, a mock feni distillery and the spice garden.
Chandor
This small, sleepy village is located 15 km east of Madgaon and occupies the site of Chandrapur, an ancient capital of the region from 375 AD to 1053 AD. The main reason to come here is for the 400-year-old Braganza House. Both the Menezes Braganzas and the Braganza Pereiras families lived in this very majestic house. The rooms are filled with exquisite treasures, including beautiful period furniture and Chinese porcelain.
Benaulim
Located 2 km south of Colva is the first of the gorgeous, secluded beaches of south Goa – completely unlike the action-packed beaches of the north. The resorts here are quite expensive, but it’s a wonderful place to just get away from it all. Benaulim village has a small supermarket as well. The beach is less than a kilometre from the village.
Varca
The scenery at Varca is very rural; there are beautiful fields on either side of the road. Varca is located 14 km southwest of Madgaon. There are a number of resorts close to Varca village that take advantage of its perfect, unspoiled stretch of beach. If you want the opportunity to savour a pristine beach and take long walks through the green Goan countryside, then definitely stay at Varca.
Cavelossim
This village is located 20 km southwest of Madgaon. Given that this is a rural area, Cavelossim is a surprisingly developed little place, complete with a shopping arcade; this is chiefly due to the presence of the Leela, the last and most luxurious of the southern Goan resorts. The beach is breathtakingly clean and striking because it’s at the mouth of the Sal River. This is the perfect place to come when you want to relax, pick a serene spot on the beach and forget about everything!
Palolem Beach
Also known as “Paradise Beach”, this beautiful beach is located 37 km southwest of Madgaon, in the Canacona district. It is a 2 hour drive from the nearest resort, Leela Beach. Palm groves and low, green mountains back along a curving stretch of white sand. The water here is shallow and warm, with very little surf. Depending on the tides, you can wander past the secluded coves and nooks sheltered by rocks. This beach is perfect for seclusion and idyllic scenery.
