Goa Attractions
North Goa
Arambol Beach
It is located 48 km northwest of Panjim and is Goa’s northernmost beach. You enter through a hippie colony where young foreigners live in small huts. The best part of the beach is a 20 minute walk to the right, beyond the food and drink shacks. The sea is rougher here than at other beaches, but the scenery is spectacular. The beach is safe for swimming, but a bit more fun for surf-seekers.
Vagator Beach
This beach is located 25 km northwest of Panjim and comes to life after dark with Goa’s infamous raves. There are many secluded sandy coves and palm trees. To the north, you can see the dark red walls of the old hill fort, Chapora. Vagator’s gentle surf is great for swimming. This part of Goa is not as developed as the beaches farther south.
Baga Beach
This small beach is located 15 km northwest of Panjim and is in the Bardez district; a lively place known for its hopping “shack life”. The beach is named for the mouth of the Baga River (at its northern end).
Calangute Beach
It is located in the Bardez district between the Sinquerim and Baga Beaches. Calangute Beach is 12 km northwest of Panjim. The beach is accessible by cement steps, however swimming is dangerous – there is a fairly strong undertow here. This particular beach is always bustling; the entrance area is crammed with a variety of restaurants, stalls and shops. During the high season (winter), dozens of shacks pop up on the beach, serving inexpensive alcohol and seafood. Calangute is a very commercial and crowded beach; nonetheless, at night, dozens of beach shacks come to life with lights and music and a general holiday mood!
Mapusa
This is an ideal place to buy souvenirs. People from adjoining villages convene here to sell everything from vegetables to handicrafts. Friday is the big market day. The town, which is located 15 km north of Panjim, is good for brief visits to change money, go shopping and take care of other necessities.
Reis Magos Fort
Built by the Portuguese at the narrowest point of the Mandovi, Reis Magos is a good diversion before you get to the main fort in the area, which is Aguada. One cannot enter this fort, but you can have a breathtaking view of the church from this point. You reach this fort by climbing very steep, mossy steps and, it is located 5 km southeast of Sinquerim Beach.
Fort Aguada
Located 4 km south of Sinquerim Beach, Fort Aguada is perched high on a hill with wonderful views of the Arabian Sea. It was built in 1612 and named for the natural springs that supplied not only the fort, but also the passing ships. It is a magnificent fort that is still in excellent condition. Inside you can take a good look at the solid laterite architecture and the old lighthouse. It is not an easy walk, as it is a fairly steep hill to climb, so hire a car if time is a constraint.
Sinquerim Beach
This is one of the few beaches where you can rent windsurfers, water skis and other water toys without having to be a guest at a hotel. It is located 10 km northwest of Panjim and stretches in front of the three Taj resorts. It is much cheaper to rent equipment from these places, but always check the condition of the equipment and make sure life jackets are provided. This small, sandy beach can get fairly crowded at times with tourists and vendors. The water, however, is warm and clean and its slightly higher waves make it an ideal place for bodysurfing!
